I wouldn't advise doing structural DIY, as for aesthetic it really depends on price point and location, it sounds like this may be a luxury home so you might want to do a little more, but if this is a tract home you could be just fine with "agreeable gray" and "tolerable tan" because spending more money does not = more value.

Doesn't really matter but to keep everything clean I would have a business account that all money goes in and out of so you and your CPA can tract everything.
