If I were you I would start by going down to your local municipality or treasure's office and just ask if they have a list of properties that weren't bought at auction.

Contact the County Adminsitrator or what ever the officeis that handles estates and wards of the county/state, it's not the collector's office.Alsocontact the Secretary of sftate and Treasurer, for dormant accounts and unclaimed assets.

Also contact a few people handling the sales.If you went to the county treasurer in the states I did this in you would just get a blank stare, however do what Dan suggested that may be the way to do it in Michigan.In my states the only ways to get your hands on some of the money is to collect a finders fee for it like the heir hunters do in probate cases.
