There is a property I am interested in from auction.com in San Diego.I am considering booking a flight since I live out of state and I know auctions are often canceled so I am worried about wasting the effort.On the other hand, this is the most interesting property I have found in the three years I have been watching.To give everyone a sense, I would go to the auction if the odds are greater than 10% that I will have a chance to bid. 

We have not used any points yet but we're pretty open - any business related expense like flights to other markets to view properties, etc, we can use points or just charge as a business expense. 

There are many different rental business models that are VERY different:College rentals "by the room"  Short-term rentals like vacation rentals or corporate rentals marketed to a particular community like traveling nurses,  line guys,  pipeline guys, flight attendants'Community' rentals for artists, old-folks, sober-houses, and care-homes1) Family opinion:Since you do seem to value the opinion of your family, make sure you are aware of the many different ways to make money as a landlord and be prepared to discuss the pros and cons of diiferent business models when the topic comes up.

@Andrew Schloe  @Dinah Tabora I'd recommend using a Turnkey provider that is within a few hours drive if at all possible and if not possible then one that is an easy flight (a couple of hours total travel by plane including time to the airport).

And a short, direct flight beats 3 layovers.We self manage (not much to do on long term fully remodeled SF) and for ease of access we consolidated our portfolio to a 20 min radius around where I live.

But DFW has a lot more flights.

Don't spend your time on piddly investments that earn you enough for a flight to Des Moines and a stay at the Super 8.
