Your 6 closest associates
I have heard it said many times that your earning power is equal to the average earning power of your 6 closest associates. So the people you spend the most time with; the people you see and talk to every day; the people who can have the most influence over your thoughts, actions and motivation, have to be chosen VERY carefully.
I believe this theory and can piont to my own life for validation. If you are struggling to find success or having any difficulty with motivation, take a look at who you are spending your time with and you might find an area of your life that needs re-arranging. If you are just starting off and are looking for a mentor, a coach or even a coleague for advice; make sure that you are looking in the right spot and picking wisely. If you find yourself spending too much time with the brother-in-law who has trouble keeping a job, your probably not getting the input and directio yo need for success.
When I made the decision that success was the only option, I had to make some tough decisions about who I was getting direction from and who I was going to let give me advice and motivational talks. Gone were the days of listening to anyone who earned less than what I wanted to earn. (Remember - I'm talking busines and real estate advice only!) I surrounded myself with people who were inspired to succeed and joined mastermind groups where I would be surrounded by the top thinkiers in my industry. Those decisions have paid off very well and have opened doors that, without those associations, would still be closed today.
Because of those open doors, my earning power is up and my associations are carefully guarded!

Chris - I was lucky to learn this fairly early in life, and used it as a lesson regularly, back in my teaching days. This is one of those life lessons that everyone needs to learn, no matter who they are or what they do.

Great post! I could not agree more. Our circle of influence needs to be like minded and like goal minded people.
