Turn Passion into Progress by Changing Your Inner Dialogue
One of the biggest roadblocks that anyone pursuing real estate investing must face is their inner dialogue - the conversations they have with themselves. Ironically enough, sometimes our biggest enemies are our own minds.
As a real estate investor, I have certainly found that my own inner dialogue was an obstacle when I started investing. However, I learned by training my mind to think more efficiently and positively, I have been able to reach heights I once never thought possible in my career. Although this takes practice, there are many things you can do to improve the way you think about yourself and your goals.
Use your brain efficiently.
One of the most common reasons that people cite for not getting things done is that they feel distracted and can’t focus. Yes, there are going to be external distractions, but we are also distracted by our own inner concerns and doubts. If you spend time thinking about how you aren’t sure if you’ll be successful, you are distracting yourself. Instead, train yourself to edit your thoughts by disregarding ones that aren’t related directly to progress and focus your mental energy where it matters. You’ll not only be more successful, but you will find yourself feeling more energized and positive, because you won’t be bogged down by thoughts you don’t need.
“The biggest obstacle to wealth is fear. People are afraid to think big, but if you think small, you'll only achieve small things.” - T. Harv Eker
Fight your doubt with confidence - even when it’s hard.
No matter how much you streamline your thinking, there will still be doubts and worries that creep into your thinking from time to time. Instead of letting these feelings go, address them head-on with a self-affirming thought. Next time your inner dialogue wants to say “I Can’t”, change it to say “How Can I”?
” Nothing has any power over me other than that which I give it through my conscious thoughts.” — Tony Robbins
Don’t measure yourself directly to others – be inspired by them.
Often new investors see what others in our field have done and start doubting their own abilities to be successful. Although it can be hard at times to see others succeed where you still may be struggling, you should not feel inferior or jealous. You need to use that as inspirational and motivational fuel, instead of beating yourself up for what you haven’t yet accomplished.
“Don't compare yourself to others compare yourself to the person from yesterday”
As your inner dialogue starts to improve, you will notice that it is much easier to take concrete steps forward on your path to success. Instead of getting distracted by thoughts and worries that don’t benefit you, you will be able to focus on what really matters.
