Learning how to tile

As part of my "continuing eduction", I'm having a friend teach me how to tile a floor.  I have done many aspects of rehab work so far, including:

- Basic electrical - replacing outlets, switches, and light fixtures

- Installing cabinets

- Replacing vinyl floors in bathrooms and hallways

- Cleaning

- Painting - ceilings, walls, and trim

- Some drywall work

But up until this point, I have never done tiling and wanted to learn as I feel that I could do it if someone just showed me how.  Somehow, watching a video isn't the same as doing it yourself.

For my experiment, there is a section in the basement of one of my rentals that could get finished with a tile floor.  So in addition to improving one of my rentals, and providing the current tenant a benefit, I'm using it as my "classroom".  Seems like a win-win!

My friend has the tile saw, so I'm covered there.  His labor will probably cost me lunch, which I'm more than happy to provide as part of the "tuition".

As for materials, I'm going to scout out the local Habitat Restore which generally has a wide variety of 12" tiles available at very low prices.  If there's not enough for the entire floor, I'll find two colors that complement each other and do some sort of design.  (It's a basement.)

I never do enough "before and after" pictures, so one thing I'll have to do this time is get some pictures!
