Tony Robbins Asked Me This - How Would YOU Answer?

If you’re a business owner or team leader, ask yourself, “What business am I in?

Write down the first thing that comes to mind, then ask yourself, “What business am I really in?”

(Keep following me to the end. I promise it’s worth it.)

Early on in my real estate journey my answer to that question was simple – I’m in real estate.

Of course, I’d elaborate and say, “I invest in real estate” or “I flip houses.”

Those are all true statements, but they only explained the activities that I do, not what business I’m really in.

The purpose of every business is to solve a problem for a customer.

Like many business owners, I was focused on the product instead of the customer.

So, a few years ago I spruced it up a bit:

“I provide valuable real estate and investment solutions that enhance people’s lives and communities.”

That sounds a lot better, right?

Since 2018 that’s been my company’s mission statement since.

Then a few weeks ago at Tony Robbins’ Business Mastery I was challenged to take it a step further.

While my revised answer is a lot better than simply “real estate” or “flipping houses”, it still did not explain the problem I’m really solving for my customers on emotional level.

If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank you’ve probably heard Mark Cuban ask contestants, “What are you really selling?

He’s trying to see how well the contestants really understand their customers and their business.

L’Oreal does not sell cosmetics. They sell beauty and confidence.

Walt Disney World does not sell a vacation. They sell magical experiences.

Uber does not sell transportation. They sell convenience.

Everything those companies do to sell their products & services, from advertising, marketing & branding, product labeling, etc. is customer-focused. Everything!

With that in mind, I went back to the drawing board and came up with this:

“I help people build wealth and passive income to achieve financial freedom and create a legacy.”

If I had to sum it up into two words, it’s freedom and legacy.

Everyone I work with, whether passive investors, real estate investors, or real estate agents – they all have a desire to achieve financial freedom & build a legacy.

Now ask yourself, “What business am I really in?

Take some time to think about it.

Once you come up with it, make sure that message is evident in everything you do.
