Define Your Why- Why are you Selling your Home?

The very first step in preparing to sell your own home is to define your why. Why are you moving?

Over the last 15 years I have worked with sellers who are moving for so many different reasons: Relocation, growing family, downsizing…

All of these are completely valid reasons for selling a home and each different reason will affect your process.

Let me tell you about when my husband Curtis and I decided to make our first big move. We were living in our college town, we had been married a few years and we had just had our first baby. I was selling real estate for a builder and when my baby was 6 weeks old I headed back to work. Well, not long after we found out we were pregnant with our second child. Seriously, Milo was just 3 months old when we found out. My boys were going to be just 12 months apart. If I’m honest we kinda freaked out. Once we came to terms with the fact that a second baby was on its way, we made an action plan. We knew we needed help since I was going to continue working and we needed to be close to family. Since babies dictate when they are going to come out, the clock was ticking. We had less than 6 months to make a move. We were motivated.

Your motivation is going to determine your actions. Knowing WHY you are selling your home will help you determine the best timing and way to price your home

There are some of you out there that NEED to sell. Curtis and I needed to sell. We were in a place that was way too small for us with two kids, and we needed to be close to family so I could continue to work. We had to be more aggressive in how we priced our home. We could not wait around for the perfect offer.

Then there are some of you that just WANT to sell your home. You are excited about a new area of town, you are wanting to be closer to friends or you are planning on growing your family or taking in a parent in the future. Your reason may not have a time frame. There may not be any pressure for you to sell now versus a year from now. For those of you in this position - take your time, don’t stress about the pace. But make sure you Define Your Why so that you are able to come back to that motivation throughout this process.

Take a minute to really think about what is motivating you to sell your home. If you are here and part of the Bigger Pockets community you have already thought quite a bit about this idea, but it is so helpful to put it in writing and refer back to that WHY. At Real Estate Supply Co., we are committed to helping you with this process. We’ve got all the tools and supplies you need to sell like a boss. So keep doing the work and believe me- you’ve got this!
