Time period after a person dies to start doing business
I am in the midst of collecting probate information from the local courthouse to send off direct mail, and I was wondering on average what is the best time after the death of a family member to send of mail?
I want to be respectful to the family during their time of grieving but at the same time want to help the liquidate assets that they don't need and get deals done.
I would say 30 days won't make you seem like a vulture.

When you pull probate files the PR has already been confirmed by the court to represent the estate.
So the administration process has already started. You should be alright in sending your mailer(s).
Remember to show sympathy and compassion in the wording of your letter. In the Tools section of BiggerPockets go to FilePlace; Free Forms & Files for a sample probate letter to send to PR's (personal representative)..
Good luck...
@Akiewole Williams You may be confusing probate and pre probate. Pre probate is a nice way of saying I've read the obituary and found out this person has property. In my opinion that is crossing the line. Probate is when an heir has went and filed for the estate to be settled. At that point I begin marketing to them because they have decided they are ready to settle all matters with the estate. Each state and county within those states have different laws and timelines that events happen in, but I have found very little negative feedback marketing once they file the succession. I always acknowledge that someone has passed and offer condolences up front. Good luck.
Generally by the time you know of the death it is OK to give your condolences as you hand them your business card and offer your assistance. Most funeral activities have been concluded within a week after death and by then decisions are being made so it doesn't hurt to plant the seed regarding financial matters. First to the post is often the winner.
It would be inappropriate to hang around funeral parlors handing out cards.
