Of all the places you lived, where would you move to right now

I have only ever lived in Wisconsin so I do not have a good idea as to how it compares to other places.  I know it always seems that the grass is greener in another state but I want to get some sort of consensus.

The south is only getting hotter.  Austin TX has seen the average number of 100+ days go from 14 to 24 in the last 30 years.  The north is getting warmer ... I have seen winters here get milder and milder.  I could go south, but Illinois has high taxes like California and there is an outflux of people from both states.

To me, the states in the middle seem appealing.  Like NC, SC, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Colorado, Utah, Nevada.

But I want to hear what you think.  Tell me a place that you have lived before and would be the one place you would live if you had nothing binding you to where you are now.

I made a trip to WA to look at homes this June and every property I wanted to see suddenly got pending offers.  These were in Shelton, Olympia, down the I-5 corridor to Vancouver.  Homes did not last a few days in the market and were scooped up quickly.  Very disappointing.  But, I'm not surprised.  People are starting to discover the Pacific Northwest.  That is, until they face their first fall/winter and don't see the sun until April.  LOL, but the views are great and the ocean is right there.  

How's the market out in Skagit County?  I am pretty much open to anything as long as I have internet access, it's quiet, and in the country with space between the neighbors and I.

I have lived in Santo Domingo DR, San Juan PR, Atlanta, Raleigh, Jupiter/North Palm Beach/Palm Beach Gardens and as get ready to retire, I think the parameters to locate do change with age.You want excellent medical care / good access to transportation / airport w/ cheap fares/ mountains and lakes and occasional beach. Love the Destin, FL area, New Orleans and NYC to visit for a while, but deep down I need to travel and stay for a week or maybe a month in areas around the world to allow me to be curious and explore and meet new people and become fascinated with culture / food and beautiful areas. Bet I will leverage my $1 ebay timeshares and RCI to wanderlust while I leave in a beautiful area of Atlanta with family and friends. No better place than home.

Moved from Bali to Austin, TX 10 years ago.

We like it here, but we're growing tired of the 8-month long summers and lack of infrastructure to support the incredible growth. And we really miss mountains. (Outdoor activity in Texas seems to be limited to state parks and knowing someone with land.)

We're interested in finding another spot but don't have a strong pull anywhere, other than family in Utah but we can't get excited about moving back there, so we're stuck in indecision. We've wondered about Colorado Springs or Fort Collins, and Charlotte or Raleigh. But we'd be moving in blind with no network or knowledge and with having kids now, it feels a little trickier. I'd love people's thoughts around where to go, based on combining good weather without extremes on either side (crazy winters or summers) and good rental markets for cash flow.

@Rachel Underwood we currently live on Oahu and will cry when the military sends us elsewhere at the end of the year. I thought I’d get “island fever” but we travel every 6 months or so away from the islands and in between island hopped so never felt it. If I never travelled off the island, maybe it would get old? We have been here 2.5 years and it hasn’t gotten old. Living here is one reason we are starting our real estate journey, so we can buy a house on one of the islands to retire in!

Brad, I grew up in Florida, lived in a bunch of spots after that while being in the military, and moved to Fort Collins after that. IMO nothing beats Fort Collins, Colorado. Best place I have lived by far.

For context, I have lived in the DC metro area, Arizona, and Missouri. My favorite place would have to be the DC metro area because of the culture, diversity, economy, schools, and overall quality of life. And currently that is where I reside now. But if I were to move, I would be interested in San Diego California, Portland Oregon, or Seattle Washington. I have heard great things about those cities and would love to explore them for myself.

@Beth Wade That's awesome, thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like traveling a couple times a year is key to avoid "island fever." Now that I think about it, I'd get antsy anywhere I lived if I never traveled. Wow, I love that you're getting into real estate with that goal as one of your "whys!"

@Kevin Rea It’s North Idaho for me - love this area and all of its natural beauty - not to mention we can enjoy the outdoors of Washington state, Montana and British Columbia. The biggest downside I can see is there is a state income tax.

I'm a big advocate of traveling abroad as I believe it generally opens ones mind and allows you to see things from new perspectives
