Tenant gave security deposit, but hasn't put in application

I had prospective tenant's view an apartment yesterday. When they learned that there were multiple interested parties, they put down a security deposit to hold the apartment. I did not have any agreement on hand to say that it would be non-refundable (my error I know) and took their check. They said they would put in an application that night, but I have received nothing. Also, they have not responded any  texts or phone calls today.

What would be a reasonable length of time to give before contacting the other applicants? I had another strong applicant that I would worry about losing if I don't message them back, but I know taking the security deposit from the other applicant's does give them the understanding of the unit being theirs.

I would never take a check for a security deposit. Leave them a message that you have been unable to reach them, Tell them they have one hour to respond or you will void their check; if they want the check returned they have 24 hours to pick up the voided check.. In the unlikely event that they answer or return your call, give them a couple of hours to get in the application. It's probably not a good idea to take anything other than a non-refundable application fee from an unvetted candidate.
