going to housing court for violations.
I just received a letter from the City regarding one of my rental properties for a court hearing because I missed a hearing they scheduled on the 7th.
I received a letter a few weeks ago with some minor violations and one expensive one which includes.
- Missing smoke detector on second floor
- Missing handrail
- Yard waste
- Build code conforming garage ( there is no garage currently).
I didn’t look at the original letter closely enough to realize I was supposed to appear in court on November 7th to discuss violations.
I have never been ordered to court before to discuss housing violations so I just assumed they wanted me to get these issues corrected.
Now I have a new court date based on yesterdays letter. I will be going to court on 11/21 to explain why I missed the original hearing and discuss the violations. Is there anything else I should say to the judge other than what I told you?
Also – my big gripe with the city is that they want me to build a garage. When I bought this house in 2014, it was violation free. Can they make me build a garage? This was not one of my better investments, had I known they were going to someday require a garage I would have never purchased. I called the city inspector and I am waiting to hear back.
