Chicago: Security Camera Systems

Sahil Relan

Hi All,

Would like to hear from fellow investors about some security camera systems they use in Chicago. Problem is that I cant use tenants internet for the system. I ideally want to put 3-4 cameras covering the exterior of the property.

What are some of the solutions do other investors use?

My property is in South Shore Chicago.

As always, appreciate the responses.

A lot of factors will come into play when determining the best options here, especially accessibility to power and internet access (if you want remote viewing or cloud storage).

For some of our apartment complexes, we have installed owner-paid internet for common areas, for others, we have used cameras that communicate via cellular signal and solar due to lack of power and internet connection.

@Sahil Relan - Maybe a silly question, but why couldn't you use the tenant's internet or at least hook up a separate data line just for the cameras?

I have a camera on one of my buildings on the northside of Chicago and I honestly just use the tenant's internet.  Maybe it's a problem and I didn't even know it.

Thing is what if the tenant leaves. Single point of failure :)

@Percy N. Thanks for the response, which cellular cameras do you use?

A solution- Depending on the building we will provide the internet to tenants as a perk (Cost for the internet is considered when we establish the rent) then we can piggy back cameras on the network.

@Sahil Relan smart move installing cameras around your property. Simpli safe and reolink (available at amazon) I know have good cameras that are either solar powered or don't require wifi. Good luck!
