What are the upsides and downsides of Auction properties?

Hi Everyone, 

I'd like to learn more about Auction properties and how does the overall process work. How does the process work? Can you share any success/awful stories about a time you bought an auction property? It's tough to find a property on the MLS with good margins in my area and I'm debating if I should be taking this route.
