I don't have a recommendation for you, but if you are starting out would definitely think about cost vs value. While you may find cheaper solutions to a whole remodel by a handyman, the quality might not be as good. Not to say you can't succeed by doing it this way, but I would always suggest finding a good reliable contractor. Working with my dad who is a contractor for many years, I have seen the horror stories that average handyman a can bestow on properties. What may be cheap in the beginning will cost you in the end.
