How to start investing with a fully paid for house

Hello, I have a large house that is fully paid for in a wonderful area. I make enough money to keep things running and get by, but not enough to really set aside to invest in any great quantity.

My wife and I are somewhat young...35...but I realize time is getting short, and I want to start accumulating wealth. I have this house as a great asset, and I realize I could leverage it to start investing in other properties, but I have some concerns. My biggest concern is using the house as collateral, removing the "paid for" status. It frightens me, as most people say "leave it that way".

Any thoughts?

This is a matter of what allows you to sleep soundly at night. I think there's a misplaced notion of risk as this evil thing that should be avoided at all costs. I think thats totally wrong.
Heres how I see it. There are two main kinds of risk careless risk and calculated risk. I talk about this to my friends when I talk about stock market investing, but the same applies to real estate. Making decisions based on a hot tip (unreliable source of information) is taking a careless risk. When you make decisions to invest based on sound facts analyzed by your own reliable methods, that's taking a calculated risk.
I have a mortgage on my home because the borrowed money is super cheap as measured by historical borrowing costs. I am young and growing my real estate business and I continue to need capital to grow my business and the cost of that capital is a factor in what I can/t do.
If I was starting now and my house was paid for and I had to borrow money to invest, I would be borrowing higher cost money just to be able to say my house is paid for. I would also pass on the opportunity to borrow at today's OO rates. No crystal ball here, but I think 5 yrs from now well be saying "remember when we could get 3-4% mortgages!
When you do this business right, you know how to analyze deals and that is how you take calculated risks in REI. When you know what you're doing, you'll have the confidence that will allow you to sleep like a baby.
